The YouTube Gunman

Just 24 hours after 22-year-old Matti Saari was questioned by police after he posted a disturbing YouTube video and released because he had the proper gun license, he went to a school and opened fire on students:

Saari uploaded disturbing footage onto YouTube of himself practising at a firing range and turning to the camera to proclaim: ‘You will die next.’

Worried police interviewed the second-year domestic science student about the clips - but, because he had an appropriate gun license, did not take him into custody.

Just one day later he stormed into an exam hall and opened fire with an automatic weapon before killing himself.

Porn Mode - Microsoft adds to Internet Explorer 8

For all you pervs out there (you know who you are), Microsoft has added a new, uh, tool called InPrivate Browsing, to the second Beta version of Internet Explorer 8, which is handy if you don’t want your wife, girlfriend or daughter to see where you’ve been when you said you were paying the bills. This feature will not save your browsing or search history, cookies, form data, or passwords, and will clear its cache when you’re, uh, finished. No wonder it’s nicknamed “Porn Mode.”

TwittAd wants to make you twoney

Think your Twitter profile is popular enough that it should start making you money?

If so, then TwittAd is here to help.

The service is designed to match users who don’t mind a little product placement and website promotion on their Twitter profile with advertisers looking for a new way to reach eyeballs, and offers Twitter background images that include the sponsor’s logo and information.

Twitter backgrounds don’t include clickable links, so it’s a little bit of a disconnect between the ad and a typical ad measurement statistic like click through rates and page views, but with a lot of companies eager to start using the service to reach a new audience, I don’t think it’s going to be tough to sell the spaces.

Visual Search Engine: Preview Before You Click Through

When you do a search on Google or Yahoo, the search engine churns out a list of websites accompanied by abstracts that are used to decide whether a site is worth checking out. Sometimes this process involves much back-and-forth as you look for the answers you need. Well, wouldn’t it be nice to get a preview of the websites retrieved before clicking through?

Searchme is a visual search engine that displays search results as an image gallery of screenshots that you can scroll, giving you a better idea of a site’s relevance. With its clean, elegant, intuitive design, Searchme is both easy on the eyes and easy to use.

Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using IE

Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using Internet Explorer on August 1, 2008!

I apologize if you’ve been trying to visit this site yesterday evening and it’s been down.

I just discovered that the SiteMeter tracking code that counts visitors to my site was causing visits from Internet Explorer to crash. I first realized the issue this morning.

After further investigation, I discovered that SiteMeter is bringing down every site where its counter code is loaded when the visiting browser is Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and 7.0. The error may also affect Internet Explorer 5.5.

Tens of thousands of publishers use sitemeter to track their content, including thousands of bloggers. It has been a great tool for analyzing my website’s traffic data.

The text of the error is “Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site.”

How to fix the IE error on Wordpress, Blogger, and other sites?

I removed the Sitemeter tracking code from my sites and now all is loading fine.

For further status, visit http://www.sitemeter.com in Internet Explorer.
If it works, they’ve probably got it fixed.

New Search Engine www.Cuil.com

Anna Patterson, an Xoogler(ex-Googler) who was once in charge of Google’s large search index project TeraGoogle, launched a new search engine www.cuil.com in a bid to shake the dominance of her former employer on Monday. As a fervent Google user, I will not use Cuil (pronouced cool) as my major search engine any time soon (after all as a launch version, cuil has too much to improve), but its magazine-like format search results supplemented with relevant pictures in a 2~3-columned layout sure will may let me make it as an alternative of Google when I search for celebrities’ pictures.
