A spinning, cylindrical-shaped structure with the ability to hold 10,000 residents was named the winner of an annual NASA competition which was the brainwork of a Toronto high school student. Eric Yam, a 12th grade student in Toronto’s Northern Secondary School took the grand prize making him the first Canadian to win such an award. The space colony Asten, named after the Egyptian god of balance is 1.6 kilometer-high structure made up of a series of habitation rings stuck in the shape of a cylinder. The entire structure rotates on its axis, simulating Earth-like gravity for its inhabitants. Yam’s plan calls for 15 years of planning followed by 12 years of construction and another three years to make the settlement habitable. His estimated cost to build the station is $563 billion US.

Tommer Leyvand and colleagues have created a “beautification engine,” a software program that uses a mathematical formula to alter a person’s face into what theoretically is the more “beautiful” version, while retaining “unmistakable similarity” to the original:
Studies have shown that there is surprising agreement about what makes a face attractive. Symmetry is at the core, along with youthfulness; clarity or smoothness of skin; and vivid color, say, in the eyes and hair. There is little dissent among people of different cultures, ethnicities, races, ages and gender.
Yet, like the many other attempts to use objective principles or even mathematical formulas to define beauty, this software program raises what psychologists, philosophers and feminists say are complex, even disturbing, questions about the perception of beauty and a beauty ideal.
To what extent is beauty quantifiable? Does a supposedly scientific definition merely reflect the ideal of the moment, built from the images of pop culture and the news media?

works just as well. Have fun.

Brady Clark and Mykle Hansen created a vest that lets bicycle riders show off how fast they’re pedaling:
How does the vest work?
In a nutshell, it uses a sensor on your wheel to send a signal to a microcontroller that then turns the numbers on and off on the vest.
Why did you invent this?
Have you ever outpaced cars and been honked at? Had a car almost wipe you out while making a turn? The Speed Vest was invented because we were curious to know if putting more information in front of drivers might change their awareness of bicyclists. That, and we suspect a lot of people don’t realize that an average person can bike 10-15 mph (15-25 km/h).
