Hendrix and Morrison are long gone in body, but their souls live on through their music, eternally playing through radios and iPods across the planet. Not to mention cassettes. There are still plenty of people who rely on the dead technology of cassette tapes to jam out to their old favorites. But listening to music is only a fraction of what can be done with these ancient musical artifacts.

If you have enough time on your hands and enough patience to win a staring contest versus a dead man then cassette art is a clever way at resurrecting the classic musicians of yore, as seen through the Ghost in the Machine project by Flickr user iri5. This awesome Flickr’er took the time to recreate Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison using nothing but ripped-out tape from inside of a cassette. The Hendrix piece is decidedly more awesome in our opinion, but really, come on, it’s Jimi! Plus it doesn’t hurt that Hendrix’s nappy hair was more fitting for such a project. Based on its company name, they selected an apple as its main form of branding. Initially, the logo depicted a small apple shape sitting under a tree with Apple Computer Co set into the frame of the picture. It is this apple that has continued to be used. The first logo design was perceived to be a bit too complex and hard to view, so Regis McKenna worked on the logo some years later and added a “bite mark” to symbolize the concept of seduction of the customers and the marketplace in general.

Next, the monochrome version was replaced with the rainbow-colored logo as a reference to the Biblical story of Adam and Eve in which the apple represents the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. It brings to mind that people must pursue their dreams. While this was not initially a deliberate goal, it did encourage business and consumers to consider the Apple brand for the first time and was successful in generating increased profits.

A spinning, cylindrical-shaped structure with the ability to hold 10,000 residents was named the winner of an annual NASA competition which was the brainwork of a Toronto high school student. Eric Yam, a 12th grade student in Toronto’s Northern Secondary School took the grand prize making him the first Canadian to win such an award. The space colony Asten, named after the Egyptian god of balance is 1.6 kilometer-high structure made up of a series of habitation rings stuck in the shape of a cylinder. The entire structure rotates on its axis, simulating Earth-like gravity for its inhabitants. Yam’s plan calls for 15 years of planning followed by 12 years of construction and another three years to make the settlement habitable. His estimated cost to build the station is $563 billion US.

The project even shows how the society on the station would work and borrows heavily from Canadian policies, including adoption of a tax regime based on the Canadian income tax system and deciding who lives on the station based a point system modeled on Canada’s immigration policy. The contest is co-sponsored by the NASA Ames Research Center and the U.S.-based National Space Society and is for students from ages 11 to 18 from around the world, with two age categories for the contest.

Heating up
By closing the laptop an air cushion blows itself up, which is connected by a valve with the fan of the computer. The computer is in the “sleep mode” and warm exhaust air is blown into the pillow. The material is coated with Latex at the inside, so the supplied warm air can be kept for a longer time. The heat supply is interrupted by opening the laptop again.

Making music
By closing the computer a playlist is activated by a music program. This playlist can be individually created or is automatically generated by the program. The titles being played correspond to the duration of the desired sleeping time.
Waking up
After the last music title being played, the possibility exists to be waken up. The waking time, the waking tone and the distances of the repeating waking noise are individually adjustable.

Kurt Wenner is a master artist best known for his extremely high quality street painting and chalk murals using a projection called anamorphosis. These 3D chalk drawings on pavement have been featured in many newspapers and on several television shows.

It’s still a little ways from an actual release, but it looks like the folks at Ennova Direct just couldn’t help themselves from announcing that they’ve received a patent for a newfangled biometric USB flash drive that packs a built-in OLED screen.

Even better, that OLED screen apparently actually doubles as the fingerprint scanner, which may not add much extra in terms of security, but should be good for at least a few gee whiz moments. The actual patent, however, isn’t for that bit of convergence, but for the sliding mechanism that covers the screen when it’s closed and pops out the USB connector when it’s open. No word on pricing or capacities just yet, but it looks like the first few drives should be available under the ION Technologies brand sometime in the first quarter of 2010.  Source>

Wow! Diesel is now Making motorcycle helmets! Designed with the futuristic/modernista motorcycle driver in mind, this helmet is a stunning piece of design/fashion-tech work. Definitely conjures up visions of rocketmen from the future.

They were created in association with AGV, who are already well respected when it comes to motorcycle helmets, and while there’s no pricing info, the fact that they’re emblazoned with the Diesel logo across the back tells me they’re probably not going to come cheap Link..
