From Functionality To Fantasy

Computer mouses have come a long way since they made their wooden box debut about 40 years ago, and now there are literally countless shapes, designs, and features for every type of computer user.

The mouse, an accessory that grew out of a purely functional need for pinpointing and clicking on the computer screen, has now developed into a highly personalized piece of gear with different technical
variations, depending on the primary use. Here is a look at the metamorphosis of the computer mouse over time.

The Beautification Engine

Tommer Leyvand and colleagues have created a “beautification engine,” a software program that uses a mathematical formula to alter a person’s face into what theoretically is the more “beautiful” version, while retaining “unmistakable similarity” to the original:

Studies have shown that there is surprising agreement about what makes a face attractive. Symmetry is at the core, along with youthfulness; clarity or smoothness of skin; and vivid color, say, in the eyes and hair. There is little dissent among people of different cultures, ethnicities, races, ages and gender.

Yet, like the many other attempts to use objective principles or even mathematical formulas to define beauty, this software program raises what psychologists, philosophers and feminists say are complex, even disturbing, questions about the perception of beauty and a beauty ideal.

To what extent is beauty quantifiable? Does a supposedly scientific definition merely reflect the ideal of the moment, built from the images of pop culture and the news media?

Visual Search Engine: Preview Before You Click Through

When you do a search on Google or Yahoo, the search engine churns out a list of websites accompanied by abstracts that are used to decide whether a site is worth checking out. Sometimes this process involves much back-and-forth as you look for the answers you need. Well, wouldn’t it be nice to get a preview of the websites retrieved before clicking through?

Searchme is a visual search engine that displays search results as an image gallery of screenshots that you can scroll, giving you a better idea of a site’s relevance. With its clean, elegant, intuitive design, Searchme is both easy on the eyes and easy to use.

Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using IE

Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using Internet Explorer on August 1, 2008!

I apologize if you’ve been trying to visit this site yesterday evening and it’s been down.

I just discovered that the SiteMeter tracking code that counts visitors to my site was causing visits from Internet Explorer to crash. I first realized the issue this morning.

After further investigation, I discovered that SiteMeter is bringing down every site where its counter code is loaded when the visiting browser is Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and 7.0. The error may also affect Internet Explorer 5.5.

Tens of thousands of publishers use sitemeter to track their content, including thousands of bloggers. It has been a great tool for analyzing my website’s traffic data.

The text of the error is “Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site.”

How to fix the IE error on Wordpress, Blogger, and other sites?

I removed the Sitemeter tracking code from my sites and now all is loading fine.

For further status, visit http://www.sitemeter.com in Internet Explorer.
If it works, they’ve probably got it fixed.

Info: Great Color Legends

Why is Ferrari Red Iconic of Sports Cars?

The first color that comes to most people’s mind when imagining a fast, sleek sports car is red. It is the color of fire and is often associated with energy, danger, strength, power, and determination; while sports cars are often affiliated with similar dispositions.

But why are the Italian sports cars, specifically Ferrari’s, so often red?

As the sport of car-racing began in Europe, each country was assigned a color. Green was assigned to English cars, blue to French, white to German, yellow to Italian, and red to American cars. Because Americans failed to make any considerable impact in European racing, red was eventually taken over by the Italians, while yellow became Belgium’s color.

It is a common myth that red cars are the most expensive to insure. Statistics do not prove that red cars have a higher frequency of collisions or traffic violations.
